Under guidance from the World Health Organization[WHO], the Food and Drug Administration [FDA] has published its recommendations for the strains of virus to be used in the 2013-2014 influenza vaccines distributed in the US. The recommendations reflect both a change in recommended strains and the introduction of a fourth strain for the very first time.
In the past, all vaccines had been trivalent (composed of 3 strains); however, the FDA has approved a quadrivalent (composed of 4 strains) vaccine this year. Reptrax members can get either the trivalent or quadrivalent vaccine; Reptrax will accept both types. In addition, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention [CDC] is indicating that Flucelvax, a flu vaccine for those with egg allergies, will be distributed into the US market for the 2013-2014 flu season.
The strains for the 2013-2014 flu season are:

1. A/California/7/2009pdm09-like (2009 H1N1) virus (4th year same) 2. A/Texas/50/2012 (new) 3. B/Massachusetts/2/2012-like (B/Yamagata lineage) virus (new)
