The environment where your family receives care is as important as the doctor you choose. This is especially clear during flu season. A recent study by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC), found that “for every 15 healthcare providers who receive the influenza vaccination, one fewer person in the community will contract an influenza-like illness.”1
Healthcare facilities are recognizing that patients come in with an elevated risk of serious complications or death should they contract influenza, and more of them are now requiring flu shots for employees. These increases in flu requirements will require staff to spend more time tracking and documenting those with flu shots as well as those who are declining for religious and medical reasons. Using an automated system, such as the IntelliCentrics SEC3URE service, to collect and track who is vaccinated and who is not can free critical personnel from administrative tasks and allow them to focus on patient care.
Another motivation for stricter flu vaccination compliance is to ensure full payment from CMS. SEC3URE provides an up-to-the-minute reporting tool that will demonstrate to all stakeholders just where your facility stands on compliancy at all times.
If your facility hasn’t already begun gearing up for flu season, now is the time. On July 15th, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) announced that the first 2015-2016 flu vaccine lots have been released and are available for distribution by the manufacturers.2 Consequently, Sanofi Pasteur,3 GlaxoSmithKline Bilogicals,4 and bioCSL, Inc.5 (a subsidiary of CSL Limited) all publicized this week they have begun shipping the 2015-2016 vaccines to clinics, pharmacies, doctor’s offices, and hospitals across the country. These shipments are the first of 164.5 to 173.5 million doses expected to reach healthcare professionals in the U.S. this year.6 These numbers reflect an 11%-17% increase in the number of flu shots distributed over last season!
Create a safe environment in your facility by increasing your flu compliance this year. You no longer need to send email reminders or track unvaccinated people down with the flu cart! will assume the task of automated reminders to those who have not yet gotten their flu shot as well as any other needed immunizations. Since everyone in your facility plays an important role in keeping patients safe, these reminders include anyone your facility contracts for credentialing including physicians, nurses, administrators, clerks, and vendors. We can even set up a vaccination attestation process for patient visitors. -it today!
